Food to Feed Your Brain

Posted on August 15, 2022 by shieldsandboris

You are what you eat…but is that a good thing? What we eat can and will change our lives. What we eat can help or hurt our brain as well. There are five food groups that when eaten regularly, have been linked to a healthier brain, which in turn could lead to prevention of dementia.

  • Leafy Green Vegetables – These garden favorites are especially important and should be eaten at least six times a week. For a less cognitive decline of your brain eat at least six servings of a half-cup of cooked, or one cup of uncooked leafy green vegetables weekly.

(Hint: Mix baby spinach into your morning omelet.)

  • Berries – These colorful bites of fruit are powerful brain-builders, more-so than other fruits. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory pigments that come in berries such as strawberries or blueberries should be eaten two or more times per week. (Hint: Mash strawberries on toast and peanut butter instead of jam.)
  • Fish and other seafoods – These flavorful meats eaten once a week can help your memory. The omega-3 fatty acids, or other oils such as extra virgin olive oil fight against plaques or tangles in the brain. (Hint: Switch the ham in your lunch sandwich for tuna.)
  • Nuts – These flavorful snacks, including walnuts, pistachios or almonds, help fight inflammation and insulin resistance in the brain. Five or more servings a week can also fight fat levels in your blood. (Hint: Sprinkle your favorite nuts in your morning cereal.)
  • Cocoa, Herbs, and Spices – These cooking essentials can help prevent brain damage and help with memory and learning. While they may be a small portion of your diet, they pack a huge punch to both flavor and your health. (Hint: Blend cocoa powder and chopped bananas into your morning smoothie.)

While eating these foods will improve your brain functions and slow dementia, taking supplements in their place will not. You have to eat the real thing. So, the next time you head to the grocery store, consider adding a few of these brain-healthy options to your grocery cart.
