Try These Natural Remedies for Springtime Allergies

The cold days of winter seem to finally be losing their grip and most seniors are happy to see the first signs of spring. Unfortunately, it isn’t just the robins and flowers that return in the spring. Grass and other pollen producing plants also return which can really make those who suffer from allergies miserable.

Rising pollen can also cause irritation of already strained pulmonary and cardiac systems. Seniors also face special challenges when it comes to treating allergies. Many over-the-counter medications interfere with their prescription medications or increase blood pressure. Fortunately, there are a few options for handling spring allergies naturally:

  • Watch the Weather – Many weather stations talk about the pollen count in their weather reports. If the pollen count is anticipated to be high, try to avoid going outside.
  • Invest in an Air Purifier – Although you can’t control the outside air, you can help keep the air in your home clean. Invest in an air purifier to remove pollen and irritants inside.
  • Irrigate Your Nasal Passages – Rinse your nasal passages with a saline irrigation bottle. These are available at your local pharmacy at a relatively inexpensive price.
  • Wear a Mask – You may be self-conscious doing so, but wearing a face mask on days when the pollen count is high can help keep your spring allergies in check.
  • Keep Windows Closed – Although it is tempting to fling your windows open wide after a long winter cooped indoors, don’t do it. Opening the windows will allow allergens an easy way into your home. Keep them closed, at least on the days when the pollen count is expected to be high.
  • Take a Hot Shower – A hot shower can open your nasal passages and help you breathe easier. It can also help to add a vapor tablet to the shower for additional relief.

If natural remedies fail to give you the relief you need, you may need to take allergy medication in the spring. Talk to your family doctor before taking over the counter medications.
