A few tips for Tax Season

Posted on March 26, 2022 by shieldsandboris

The holidays have ended and so has 2021. If you’ve already prepared your 2021 taxes--congratulations, you’re an early bird!

For seniors, the possibility of a tax refund can be crucial to help with paying down debt or splurging for little luxuries.

One thing that’s important to remember is that you can still mail in your forms the old fashioned way, or submit them online.

There are non-IRS tax resources available to help you when prearing to file your return:

  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
This program from AARP has been running for 50 years. It’s purpose is to help low and moderate income people prepare their taxes. The great part of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is that you don’t have to be an AARP member to use the service. In fac, you don’t even have to be a senior. There is no age requirement. You can check this service out here.
  • VITA
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program also offers free help. VITA has more than 12,000 locations nationwide. Find a VITA location near you by calling 800-906-9887.
  • A Local Tax Professional
Thousands of professional tax preparers help Americans with their tax returns each year. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or the National Association of Tax Preparers for a recommendation.
  • An Elder Law Attorney
Though an attorney’s role is different than a tax professional, the two topics cam definitely overlap--sometimes in complex ways. While your tax prep pro helps you with your filing taxes each year, your elder law attorney can help you to consider the long-term tax implications that affect your future.
