For many senior citizens, driving is one of the things that allows them to keep their freedom, however, it is sometimes difficult to find ways to stay safe while driving. Fortunately, there are plenty of adaptive aids that help address some of the most common issues that seniors face when driving. Here are a few devices that you may want to check on to assist you:
- Mirror Extenders/Adapters – One of the common struggles for an older driver is being able to see the side and rear-view mirrors. Having a panoramic mirror can give the driver a bigger view of their surroundings and assist with blind spots. This can be especially helpful for drivers who aren’t able to rotate their upper body or who have shoulder and neck problems.
- Swivel Seat Cushions – Over 30,000 seniors experience a fall exiting or entering their vehicle annually according to experts. A swivel seat cushion can help lower the chances of a fall. They are placed on the seat and help an older driver rotate their body to enter or exit the vehicle. These can also give a person a boost in height when seated to make it easier to see over the steering wheel.
- Pedal Extenders – We’ve all heard or read stories about a senior’s foot slipping off a brake or gas pedal resulting in an accident. A pedal extender will extend the length of the pedals making it easier for seniors to reach the pedals and make driving safer. It will also keep older people from sitting to close to the steering wheel, a danger if the airbags are deployed.
- Seat Belt Extenders – Seat belts can save lives, however, for some people it can be painful pulling and reaching for the seatbelt. A seatbelt extender attaches to the seatbelt adding four to six inches to the belt making it much easier, and usually less painful, for a driver to fasten their seatbelt.
If you aren’t sure if you are driving safely, these adaptive devices may be the answer to helping you feel not only safer, but more comfortable in your vehicle.
