Stay Safe This Winter with These Tips

Posted on November 7, 2022 by shieldsandboris

Winter weather is in full swing and with that weather comes some special challenges. These range from slippery sidewalks and roads to hypothermia – all of which can be especially hard for seniors. This winter, give some of these cold weather safety tips and try:

  • Protect Yourself from Falls – Even if you have managed to get your own pathways cleared, that doesn’t mean that everyone else has done the same. If you need to be out and about, protect yourself from falls by wearing winter boots or shoes with rugged soles. Try not to travel alone and take your time getting places. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
  • Carbon Monoxide Protection – An estimated 500 people each year die in the U.S. due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Be sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, especially if you have already turned on your heater. Make sure it works and that it has new batteries. The batteries should be changed yearly in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep Warm – Cold temperatures aren’t just unpleasant. They can be hazardous to your health. Be sure to dress appropriately for being outside by wearing several layers of light weight clothing. When heading outside, wear waterproof footwear that is warm, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. Winterize your home by using weather stripping and have your heater professionally serviced. Prepare your car for the winter as well by ensuring you have enough wiper fluid, anti-freeze, and tires with good tread.
  • Be Aware of Hypothermia – This happens when a person’s body temperature gets too low. Early signs of the condition include cold hands and feet, swollen or puffy face, pale skin, shivering, speech that is slurred or slower than normal, confusion, and acting sleepy. If you are exhibiting these symptoms, call 911 and get to a warmer place.

Winter can be a beautiful time of year but can also be very dangerous. With these tips enjoy the beauty of the season and stay safe.
